Shoulder Pain Clinic Cambridge
Understand the casue. Restore movement. Rebuild Strength.
Shoulder pain can affect everything from sleeping and getting dressed to working, training and playing sport.
At Light Blue Clinic, we assess your shoulder in the context of how you actually use it. We look at movement, strength, function and the demands of your work or sport to understand what may be contributing to the problem.
Our goal is not simply to reduce pain, but to help you restore confidence in your shoulder and return to the activities that matter to you.

Shoulder Pain Assessment and Rehabilitation

Shoulder pain can have many possible causes, and similar symptoms can behave very differently from one person to another. Our assessment looks beyond the painful area to understand how your shoulder moves,
how strong it is and what demands you need it to tolerate.

Your assessment may include:

• A detailed history of your symptoms and activities
• Clinical examination of the shoulder and surrounding areas
• Assessment of shoulder and thoracic movement
• Rotator cuff and shoulder strength testing
• VALD dynamometer testing where appropriate
• Assessment of control during pushing, pulling or overhead movement
• Review of training, work and daily activity demands
• A clear diagnosis and personalised rehabilitation plan

We combine hands-on clinical assessment with objective testing and progressive rehabilitation to help you understand your shoulder problem and build a clear route back to normal activity, work or sport.
Common Shoulder Problems We Treat

We regularly assess and rehabilitate patients with:

Rotator Cuff Related Shoulder Pain
Pain around the top and side of the shoulder is often linked to irritation or overload of the rotator cuff. We assess strength, tendon health and shoulder movement to identify the factors contributing to your symptoms and guide rehabilitation.

Shoulder Impingment Symptoms
Pain when lifting the arm, particularly overhead, can have several contributing factors. We assess shoulder movement, strength and control to understand what is provoking your symptoms and develop an appropriate treatment plan.

Rotator Cuff Tendinopathy
Tendon overload can cause pain, weakness and reduced function. We combine clinical assessment with objective strength testing where appropriate to guide progressive rehabilitation that builds tendon capacity and restores performance.

Frozen Shoulder
Also known as adhesive capsulitis, frozen shoulder can cause significant pain, stiffness and loss of movement. Treatment focuses on managing symptoms, maintaining function and gradually restoring movement as the condition progresses.

Shoulder Instability
A shoulder that feels as though it slips, shifts or may give way can be affected by instability. We assess joint control, strength and movement to build stability, confidence and tolerance for everyday or sporting demands.

AC Joint Pain
Pain at the top of the shoulder, particularly during lifting or cross-body movements, may involve the acromioclavicular (AC) joint. Assessment helps determine the source of symptoms and guide appropriate treatment and progressive loading.

Biceps Tendon Pain
Pain at the front of the shoulder can involve the long head of the biceps tendon. We assess shoulder function, tendon loading and strength to develop a rehabilitation plan aimed at reducing symptoms and restoring function.

Shoulder Pain After Surgery or Injury
Following surgery or an acute injury, rehabilitation needs the right balance of protection and progressive loading. We create individualised rehabilitation plans to restore movement, rebuild strength and help you return safely to work, daily activity or sport.

More Than Just Treating the Pain
Shoulder pain is not always explained by one structure alone. We assess how your shoulder moves and functions as part of the wider system, including the shoulder blade, thoracic spine and the strength and control of the muscles around the joint.

Depending on your symptoms and goals, we may assess factors such as:

• Shoulder range of movement
• Rotator cuff strength and endurance
• Side-to-side strength differences
• Shoulder blade movement and control
• Thoracic spine movement
• Pushing, pulling and overhead strength
• Sport, work and daily activity demands

The aim is to identify meaningful findings that can guide your rehabilitation — not simply to treat the area where you feel pain.
Our Approach to Shoulder Pain
01
Understand the problem

We start with your injury history, symptoms, daily activities and the demands of your work or sport.
02
Assess

Your clinician examines movement, strength, function and relevant areas around the shoulder.
03
Treat and rehabilitate

Your plan may combine hands-on treatment, symptoms managment and progressive exercise rehabilitation.
04
Restore function

We progressively rebuild movement, strength and confidence for everyday activity, work or sport.
05
Build resilience

For patients with higher demands, we continue developing strength and capcity beyond simply becomin pain-free.
Objective Shoulder Strength Testing with VALD Technology

Pain improving does not always mean that shoulder strength has fully returned.
At Light Blue Clinic, we use VALD dynamometry where appropriate to objectively measure shoulder strength and identify meaningful side-to-side differences.

Objective testing can help us:

• Establish a strength baseline
• Compare the affected and unaffected shoulder
• Identify specific strength deficits
• Guide exercise selection and progression
• Track improvement during rehabilitation
• Support return-to-work or return-to-sport decisions

Testing is always interpreted alongside your symptoms, clinical assessment and individual goals.

Treatment Tailored to You
There is no single treatment that works for every shoulder problem.
Depending on your assessment, your plan may include:

• Osteopathy or physiotherapy
• Hands-on treatment where appropriate
• Progressive strength rehabilitation
• Mobility and movement exercises
• Rotator cuff and shoulder blade strengthening
• VALD strength testing and progress tracking
• Shockwave therapy for appropriate tendon conditions
• Sports massage where useful
• Strength and conditioning
• A progressive return-to-work or return-to-sport programme

Your treatment plan is based on what we find during your assessment and adapted as your symptoms, movement and strength improve.
